Gong Bath in Nicosia, Cyprus

Lefkoşa (Nicosia) · in person & online

A gong bath is a deeply relaxing sound session in which you lie down and rest while gongs are played continuously around you. It is a type of sound bath — a session centred on the long, enveloping tones of gongs — and many people find it a calming, meditative experience.

At Casa Caravan, Tağmaç Çankaya runs gong and sound sessions in Lefkoşa (Nicosia), Cyprus — both in person and online. The Sonic Journey is a 30-minute private one-to-one session — €50, online from anywhere or in person at the space in Lefkoşa. Whichever you choose, you simply get comfortable, close your eyes, and let the sound do the rest. The gong is offered as a sound and wellness practice — not a medical treatment.

What is a gong bath?

A gong bath is a session where a gong — and often other instruments — is played continuously while you rest. The sound is rich and enveloping; you don't listen to it so much as sit inside it. It's a wellness and contemplative practice, and many people find it deeply relaxing.

Gong bath vs sound bath: a gong bath is simply a sound bath centred on gongs. A sound bath can use any resonant instruments — singing bowls, chimes, handpan — while a gong bath puts the deep, shimmering voice of the gong at its heart. At Casa Caravan the gongs are joined by handpan, gentle shakers and bells.

What happens in a session

what to expect

Every session is private and one-to-one — like a massage appointment, the time and the space are yours alone. You lie down, get warm and comfortable, and close your eyes. From there you do nothing — the sound is played around you (or through your headphones, online) in slow, layered waves. Some people drift toward sleep, some follow the tones like a landscape, some simply feel their body soften. There is no right way to experience it.

In-person gong baths in the wider field typically run anywhere from about 30 to 90 minutes. Our online Sonic Journey session is 30 minutes — long enough to settle fully, gentle on a screen. Tağmaç weaves an organic soundscape with hand-forged gongs, handpan, gentle shakers and bells, encouraging your attention to slow and rest.

Benefits — honestly

what the evidence does & doesn't say

Here's the honest version. Many people report deep relaxation and a meditative, restful state during and after a gong or sound bath. That is what we offer it for — rest, calm, a pause. We don't claim it treats or cures anything, and we'd be wary of anyone who does.

What the research shows

In a 2017 study, 62 participants reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue and depressed mood after a single 60-minute sound meditation. Encouraging — but honestly: it was observational, with no control group, so it can't prove the sound itself caused the change.

A 2025 systematic review of sound-based practices reached a fair summary: the early evidence is promising but limited, and larger, better-controlled trials are still needed before strong claims can be made.

So: come for relaxation and a restful, meditative hour — that part is real and well reported. The gong is offered as a sound and wellness practice — not a medical treatment.

Who should be careful

Gong baths are gentle, but they aren't right for everyone at every moment. Please talk to your doctor first — and let us know beforehand — if any of these apply to you:

None of this is meant to worry you — it's simply care. If you're unsure, a quick word with your doctor and a message to us beforehand is always the kind thing to do.

The gongs themselves

The gongs in these sessions aren't bought off a shelf. Tağmaç upcycles discarded, salvaged metal into gongs, shaping and tuning each one by hand in Lefkoşa until it holds a note — a fundamental with a cloud of overtones around it. Every gong is different.

It means the person striking the gong is also the person who made it. You can read the whole story — how a discarded sheet of metal becomes a tuned voice — on the Gong page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gong bath?

A gong bath is a session where a gong (and often other instruments) is played continuously while you lie down and rest. The sound is rich and enveloping, and many people find it deeply relaxing. It's a wellness and contemplative practice — not a medical treatment.

What's the difference between a gong bath and a sound bath?

A gong bath is a type of sound bath — one centred on gongs. A sound bath can use any resonant instruments (bowls, chimes, handpan); a gong bath puts the deep voice of the gong at its heart.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose clothes you can lie down and relax in. For the online session, headphones and a quiet space to lie down are all you need — a blanket and cushion make it nicer.

What can I expect my first time?

You lie down, close your eyes, and let the sound wash over you in slow waves. Some people drift toward sleep, some follow the tones, some just feel their body soften. There's no right way to do it — you don't have to "get" anything.

How long does a gong bath last?

In-person gong baths typically run from about 30 to 90 minutes. Casa Caravan's online Sonic Journey session is 30 minutes.

Is sound healing scientifically proven?

Honestly, not conclusively. Some studies are encouraging — a 2017 study found 62 people reported less tension, anger, fatigue and low mood after a sound meditation, though it had no control group — and a 2025 review calls the evidence promising but limited, with larger trials still needed. So we offer it for relaxation and rest, which people reliably report, and we make no medical claims.

How much does it cost?

A Sonic Journey session is €50 for 30 minutes — online from anywhere, or in person at the space in Lefkoşa. Both are booked via WhatsApp.

Is a gong bath safe during pregnancy?

If you are in your first trimester, please talk to your doctor first and let us know beforehand. The same goes for a pacemaker, epilepsy, or an acute mental-health condition. It's simply care, not a scare.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. A gong bath asks nothing of you except to lie down and rest. First-timers are very welcome.
